11 GLCA Curlers Head to Junior Nationals

The Great Lakes Curling Association was extremely well represented at the 2016 US Junior Curling National Championships early this month. There were a total of 11 curlers from the GLCA that made up four different teams, representing three different regions. Team Willertz of the Midland Curling Club finished the week with a 0-9 record. Team McDonald of the Midland/Mayfield Curling Clubs finished the week with a 2-7 record, with one of the wins coming from a rare forfeit from the US High Performance Team due to a lineup card mistake. Team Schroeder of the Copper Country Curling Club was the first ever national team to come from Calumet, MI and ended the competition with a 3-6 record and a title of 8th in the nation. Midland Curling Club member, Aaron Carlson, represented the GLCA as the Vice on Team Connolly of the Granite Curling Club (Seattle, WA). Carlson and team finished out the round robin with a 5-4 record, earining a spot in the 3 vs 4 playoff game. Unfortunately, Team Connolly lost in the semi-finals. Although a tough loss, Carlson should be very proud to carry the title of 4th in the nation and that of highest ranking junior curler in the GLCA. This was the 4th consecutive national appearance for both Carlson and the Schroeder sisters of the Copper Country Curling Club.

Pictured below are all 11 curlers who attended the Junior National Championships:

Back row - Aaron Carlson, Sidney Schroeder, Andrew McDonald, Sam Strouse, Will Hackbarth, Madelyn Graves

Front row - Allie Schroeder, Maya Willertz, Rachel Weldy, Delaney Strouse, Ian Strong
